Christensen Organic Dairy Farm 12/02/2009
If you really think about it, all the farms in the county were probably organic before the end of World War II. Many people ask what organic means. For land to be organic, it means there has to be 3 years after the last prohibited material, (commercial fertilizers weed killer, insecticides, etc.- only approved materials can be used) was put on the field. For the milk, the cows have to eat only certified organic feed for 1 year, not to have any antibiotics, or artificial hormones. Plus there are pasture and humane animal requirements also. To be certified means that a third party independent approved certifier, reviews your application every year and with that follows on a farm inspection for verification. We grow corn, oats, barley, wheat, rye, sorghum for silage, and lots of hay for baling and pasture. The crops are fertilized with fish, seaweed, molasses, gypsum, which contain many of the vitamins, minerals and other essential elements all naturally balanced by nature. During the growing season, our heard is rotationally grazed from the end of April till sometimes the end of November if weather permits. Our cows get a new section of pasture twice a day to increase land efficiency. The young pasture the cows eat is full of the minerals, vitamins, and omega-3 and 6. There for us to consume in the form of milk and meat from this farm. Organic/Natural Store Friendly Farm Foods, LLC Organic/Natural Store is a family run farm store providing organic beef )1 pound bulk, brats, hot dogs, summer sausage) from our farm. Also available are a variety of grocery items which include fresh produce (every other week), beverages, coconut oil, soups, pasta sauces, raw milk cheese, raw honey, cod liver oil, baking supplies, sprouted and whole wheat breads, pizza, and even ice cream. We also sell a variety of items from local farms: eggs, soaps, and fresh herbs when in season. We carry products outlined in the Weston A. Price Shopping Guide. The other hat Jim wears is that of coaching other farmers on organic farming methods for crop nutrients to livestock feed and health needs. Helping other farmers reduce input cost for crops and to farm more biologically. Biological farming is recycling the crop residues: corn stocks, green cover, compost crops, and manure. Working with and pushing Mother Nature to create humus-rich soil, expand biodiversity and improve water-quality, there by producing high quality and high quality crops. By returning organic matter to the sail, good organic and biological farming practices could be the sing most significant act we could perform to correct global warming, whether it’s you fields, lawns, or gardens. The example I like to use is a lawn full of dandelions. Dandelions in general grow where the soil is low in calcium. By applying a good form of calcium to the lawn and biological product, you naturally crate an environment that deters dandelion germination and the biological products help thickening the grass. Simple and safe. Another important job we’ve also taken on with the help of a good friend, Andy Mastrocola. Together we organized a Weston A. Price Chapter. Weston a. Price was a dentist that in the early 1930’s began a series of unique investigations. For over 10 years, he traveled to isolated parts of the glove to study the health of populations untouched by western civilization. His goal was to discover the factors responsible for good dental health and crooked teeth are the result of nutritional deficiencies, not inherited genetic defects. The different cultures he studied that had beautiful straight teeth, free of decay, good physiques, with resistance to disease were typically of native groups on their traditional diets, rich in essential nutrients. The western A. Price Foundation is dedicated to restoring nutrient rich foods to the American diet through education, research and activism. Our group has what we cal Helping HANDS, Health And Nutrition Discussion Seminars. We discuss all topics from food, health, and even politics that will affect the food you want. The old saying “you are what you eat”, is more true than you could ever believe. What you consume becomes the future cells of your body. We are working on setting up a website to share our information and will also post local producers and natural health practitioners. We give farm tours and lectures. We are truly blessed with many great friends.
